Hello everyone! I really need help on analyzing this poem called "Lament" by Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Here is a copy of it.

LISTEN, children,
Your father is dead.
From his old coats
I'll make you little jackets;
I'll make you little trousers
From his old pants.
There'll be in his pockets
Things he used to put there:
Keys and pennies
Covered with tobacco.
Dan shall have the pennies
To save in his bank;
Anne shall have the keys
To make a pretty noise with.
Life must go on
And the dead be forgotten;
Life must go on
Though good men die.
Anne, eat your breakfast;
Dan, take your medicine.
Life must go on;
I forget just why.

Please help me answer these
1. The Poetic language that is used such as the denotative/conatative meanings of key words or figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification,etc..),

2. Poetic Structure such as how the poem was constructed. Is it fixed, free verse, or open form, etc? And also what sound devices are present

3. Persona and Tone such as to whom is the speaker addressing to, the speaker's purpose, and the emotional tone that the speaker is trying to express.

The only way you could learn is to analyze it yourself.
get a dictionary to find out the connotation of the poem and reread the poem until you get it then you will know the poem well enough

the questions you posted are HELPFUL hints you have to start analysing..
I think if you wait, your HW won't be done on time..

Oh back to the questions:

1. Cognitively speaking, the poem is very straight forward in a sense of a mother who wants to think about the positive things that she can do for her kids after her husband's death. I think it is in a form of personification.

2. I think it is structuring in free verses. I am not sure about what kind of sound devices are presenting. ghe.gif

3. Irrationally, you can say she is strong and forgetful of his present in hers and her kids' life, but that is what she got to do. Face the truth! No hash feeling for sympathetic emotions. She moves on with what she can make out of the goods he had left for them. She wants to mention to her children that he was death, but he will never be gone, because what he had left is still useful. smile.gif

those are only my opinion. You and other may have different opinions, so feel free to debate them.

Firstly, i want to say thanks to NangHa for your opinions.
Secondly, as to what EternityLove just brought up, "reread the poem until you get it then you will know the poem well enough". I strongly disagree with what u said. If I understood the poem then i would not ask for others' opinions. The purpose of this forum is the right for everyone to "share" their own opinions and if no one is willing to do so or just keep their thoughts to themselves, then what's the point. If someone can help me, then i'll be grateful, if not, then i'll just figure it out myself.
